If you play guitar and have kids, odds are pretty good that at some point you have thought about guitar lessons for children. You want your child to love playing the instrument as much as you do; you may even have dreams of some day jamming or playing in a band with your kid.

Aptitude: Some kids just pick up certain things faster than others. There’s that kid that skates like he was born to it, the one who seems to be able to spell words you don’t even understand, the one who’s already flipping through the air on her bicycle. Some kids pick up musical concepts that apply to the guitar faster than others; if your kid is demonstrating rhythm and a feel for notes earlier than the age we mentioned above, you might want to give lessons a shot a bit earlier.

One of the biggest problems with signing up your kid to any guitar lessons for children is that a guitar designed for an adult won’t work for any child, no matter how confident you are in their grasp of music. That means you have to be sure to find a guitar that is a suitable size for your child.

Of course, that means you have to worry a bit about your budget. Child sized guitars are often priced higher than they should be, because manufacturers know that parents are suckers for musical learning. Be critical about the price you are willing to pay for a small guitar.

You should also keep in mind that a child size guitar won’t be as useful for as long as an adult one. Kids outgrow everything quickly, and a musical instrument is no exception. Unlike items such as clothes, though, a guitar won’t work as a hand me down, and you may not be able to sell it again either!

Finally, we want you to make sure you are discerning when it comes to your guitar lessons for children and the person teaching them. The last thing you want is for your child to give up on learning the guitar because someone is putting too much pressure on her!
